(REC) Teaching from Joy: Applying Practical Functional Assessment Across Treatment Settings

Many people have heard about the interview-informed synthesized contingency analysis (IISCA) and skill based treatment (SBT) procedures popularized by Dr. Hanley (2014) and seem genuinely interested in adopting these techniques. This panel will describe how to bridge the gap from wanting to do this and actually doing it. Panel members, representing 3 different agencies and settings, will share how they got started doing the process, what it has evolved into, examples of the process, and tips for getting started. Potential Inc and the Springtime School started in the classroom and transferred the procedures to the clinic and adult programs. Graham Behavior Services started in homes and was transferring this into public school consultation. Search Day Program started with pilot program of 4 students in pull-out analysis and treatment, transferred into the classroom and other settings on campus, scaled up process to reach more learners, and most recently began BST with the parents of SBT students.

Learning Objectives:

  • The learner will be able to start the PFA/SBT process by reviewing the literature, obtaining relevant and helpful professional development and consultation, and planning for initial implementation
  • The learner will use team meetings, professional development and consultation when applicable, and video analysis (if available) to help guide decision making in PFA/SBT cases.
  • The learner will be able to label potential barriers to initial implementation and possible solutions.
