(LIVE) Providing Trauma-responsive ABA with Youth in Foster Care

Although there has been more discussion of trauma in recent years, BCBAs may not have received education and training on the impact of trauma on behavior. ABA has been shown to be effective with youth in foster care, but with less than one percent of BCBAs working in the child welfare system, there are few opportunities to receive supervision and training with this population. Overlooking the impact of trauma may result in clients receiving inadequate support or being harmed by the use of contraindicated procedures (Kolu, 2020). This webinar will discuss ways practitioners may need to adjust ABA interventions when considering behavior in the context of trauma. By the end of the webinar, participants will 1) conceptualize trauma from a behavioral perspective, 2) identify ways that behavior interventions may be contraindicated for youth who have experienced trauma, 3) discriminate between potentially harmful and trauma-responsive interventions, and 4) identify strategies to build competence in trauma-responsive care.

Learning Objectives:

1. Participants will be able to conceptualize trauma from a behavioral perspective.
2. Participants will be able to identify at least 1 way that behavioral interventions may be contraindicated for youth who have experienced trauma.
3. Participants will be able to discriminate between potentially harmful and trauma-responsive interventions.
4. Participants will be able to identify at least 2 strategies to build competence in trauma-responsive care.
