Presenters: Amelia Bowler, BCBA
CEs: 8 Learning BACBs
Date/Time: Starting the week of April 6th, on Tuesdays from 1-2pm EST, for 7 weeks (ends may 25)
Description: Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) is a diagnosis that is often given to young people with challenging behavior, but the psychiatric label describes the topography of the behavior, not the function. As a result, many young people diagnosed with ODD do not get appropriate supports. The course will examine how these children react in unexpected ways to traditional teaching techniques, and possible reasons why.The purpose of this course is to equip you to find the core areas where your ODD-diagnosed clients struggle the most, so you can avoid common mistakes, teach essential replacement skills, and support caregivers.
Learning Objectives:
- Participants will be able to identify at least three of the diagnostic criteria for Oppositional Defiant Behavior, and the three proposed subtypes/dimensions.
- Participants will be able to explain the difference between a psychiatric diagnosis and a cause of behavior.
- Participants will be able to identify the relationship between parent emotional reactivity and disruptive behavior, and describe two ways to support parents who struggle with emotional reactivity.
- Participants will be able to explain what they would do to support emotional self-regulation for their clients, both pro-actively and in challenging moments.
- Participants will be able to identify and explain at least three executive functioning skill deficits that may contribute to disruptive behavior, and suggest interventions to support clients with these needs.
- Participants will be able to explain the cycle of coercion, common side effects of punishment, and how to provide an appropriate response to offensive or defiant behavior (without simply ignoring.)
